A study initiated and funded by the Ironworker Management Progressive Action Cooperative Trust (IMPACT) was designed to determine if field applied shear studs meet AWS welding standards.

"Any construction project of this magnitude is a challenge," said Dan Conway, President of Construction Risk Management and Surety for Chartis, at the Rebuilding Through Unity event at the World Trade Center (WTC) site in September. "But the sensitivity of this site, the perception that it may be a target for terrorist attacks during construction, the media attention surrounding various components of the project and the various distractions that have come about during construction make this an extraordinary one."

The Ironworkers have recently formed a partnership with the Post Tensioning Institute (PTI) to administer its Post-Tensioning Ironworker Certification Program. The institute has published many manuals and technical guides covering all aspects of post-tensioning, the basis of which form many of the construction practices covered by the Ironworkers post-tensioning certification training programs.

IMPACT works closely with the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and Quality Management Company, an independent third-party auditing company, to assist its contractor members in pursuing certification through the AISC Steel Erector and Fabricator Certification Programs.
