Ironworker Management Progressive Action Cooperative Trust

Expanding Job Opportunities for Ironworkers and their Contractors

The off the Job accident program has been a God's send for our injured members and helps them from digging a financial hole. There is a process  of educating the members, following up with the paperwork to the Trust Fund, insuring the member is paid. This extra time is on behalf of the Business Manager but it is worth it.

Sincerely,
Michael L. Baker
President

IMPACT Provides Wind Turbine Training

05/19/2011

Many signatory wind turbine erection and maintenance contractors request that Ironworkers arrive on the jobsite with third party nationally recognized training certificates in tower safety/rescue and bolt torque/tension. To meet the needs of our contractors, IMPACT has been making training available to all Ironworkers, local unions, and signatory contractors who are IMPACT members.

To provide the recognized training, IMPACT trustees established an agreement with the Francis Tuttle Technology Center (FTTC) in Oklahoma City. FTTC is a non-profit technology center and is a member of the Wind Energy Training Consortium which is a group of training institutions recognized by the American Wind Energy Association as promoting skill training essential for wind turbine technicians.

The FTTC courses focus only on the two major areas identified by our contractors - tower safety/rescue and torque/tension certification. The participants receive nationally recognized certificates from Capital Safety, HYTORC, and Snap-on Industrial.

Each course is four days in length with nine hours of course time each day, 8am – 5pm (including a one hour working lunch). The next courses are scheduled for:

  • 29 August – 01 September
  • 24 - 27 October

For an Ironworker to sign up for this course, he/she must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum three years experience as an Ironworker
  • OSHA 10 & Sub-Part R
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED training
  • Cannot be a convicted felon

It should also be noted that an Ironworker cannot register for these courses without being “sponsored” by either the Local Union or a contractor.  Only a contractor or a Local Union can sign an Ironworker up for one of these courses.

Note:

In addition to these scheduled courses, if a Local Union or a contractor has Ironworkers who need this training in order to work on a wind turbine project, IMPACT will arrange for the course to be conducted within 45 days of receiving a request.

IMPACT covers:

  • The course tuition
  • The lunches during the four days of the course
  • The shuttle bus to and from the airport & hotel as well as between the hotel and the school.

The costs for an Ironworker are travel expenses, including:

  • Air fare, bus fare, or personal driving expenses
  • Hotel (about $100 each night)
  • Dinner (breakfast is provided by the hotel, lunch is provided by IMPACT at the FTTC each day, and the hotel also offers a light dinner each evening)
