IMPACT has evolved over the years to better serve its members.

Approximately 16,500 tons of steel were used on the structural side with a total of 23,501 tons fabricated to complete the entire stadium project. The erection of the stadium steel was 100 percent done by SME Steel Industries through Ironworkers Union local 377 out of San Francisco. “At one point in time we had over 300 ironworkers on the site at the same day,” Salak said. “So we ran four cranes. This cooperation allowed us to complete all of the steel erection in about five months. It was a group and team effort. Everyone from the design team to the general contractor (Turner/Devcon joint venture) and the sub-contractors provided a true collaboration for a stadium of this size.

The Town of Newburgh-based Ironworkers Local 417 won a $350,000 Empire State Development grant this month that it will use to help build a $1 million addition at its Route 32 training facility to accommodate a surge in demand from the Tappan Zee Bridge and other projects.

Members of Twin Cities Iron Workers local 512 and metropolitan construction companies donated time, materials, and labor to build two 70 foot bridges at Veterans Campground on Big Marine Lake.

IMPACT Safety and Health Roundtable was held on December 7, 2016 in Washington, D.C. It featured many new safety and health initiatives to improve safety performance in the workplace. Labor Co-Chairman, Bernie Evers, Management Co-Chairman, William Brown and Secretary Steve Rank welcomed roundtable members and special guest speakers to discuss current safety and regulatory issues. Roundtable members from across the United States meet bi-annually to address workplace safety and health issues that affect the ironworking industry. Special guest speakers addressed the most pressing workplace safety and health issues and members across the United States including plant owners and contractors weighed in.

The ironworkers’ union training centers collectively spend between $80 million and $90 million a year in training. Our doors are always open, and we handle 50,000 applications annually, with more coming each year. We average 3,000 to 6,000 graduates a year.
