April 1, 2024: Crews removed a 200-ton piece of the Key Bridge from the Patapsco River on Saturday, marking the first step in clearing the collapsed span from where it fell last week when a container ship slammed into one of its piers.
Workers used two cranes on barges to remove the debris, largely concrete and steel, and moved it to another barge, Fox5 reported. These pieces will float downriver for inspection, AP News reported.
Meanwhile, crews also worked through the weekend to clear paths to allow ships to sail past the collapsed bridge and into and out of the Port of Baltimore. Two auxiliary shipping channels should open on Monday, Coast Guard Captain David O’Connell told CBS News.
