The Ironworkers Management Progressive Action Cooperative Trust (IMPACT), the labor-management arm of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers (IABSO&RIW), is proud to announce Steel Day, a hands-on, interactive day of learning about the steel industry. The September 23 event brings together architects, engineers, contractors and students in one of the largest educational and networking venues focusing on steel construction in the region.
“Steel Day is an exciting time because it gives members of the community a unique chance to become an Ironworker for the day,” said Kenny Waugh, IMPACT Director of Industry Liaisons and coordinator for the Steel Day event.
People who come to attend won’t just be shadowing ironworkers as they do their jobs, according to Waugh. Attendees are invited to install glass, try bolting and use a torch to cut steel. “We’ll even get them in a harness so they can climb columns with some ironworkers, if they want,” Waugh said.
Steel Day provides valuable information business owners as well, not just students: Attendees will also be able to attend a presentation about the structural steel supply chain, Waugh added.
In addition to hands-on activities and lectures, continuing education courses from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and the National Steel Bridge Alliance (NSBA) will showcase students’ bridge models. An award will be presented to the winning design during the day-long event.
Steel Day will be held Sept. 23, 2011, starting at 9 a.m., at the Iron Workers Local 5 Union Hall in Upper Marlboro, Md. The event is open to the public. Lunch will be provided on site.
Steel Day is an annual event sponsored by AISC, its members and partners, and held at local venues throughout the United States and Canada.
