More than a year ago, Ironworker wind turbine contractors expressed concerns about owner requirements on wind turbine projects. Our contractors indicated that some owners were requiring torque and tension certification as well as tower rescue certification for Ironworkers working on wind turbine erection projects.
IMPACT acted on these needs by developing a training partnership with Francis Tuttle Technology Center (FTTC) in Oklahoma City, OK to meet the wind turbine training needs of Ironworkers, local unions, and signatory contractors. This training meets an expressed contractor need of having Ironworkers show up on the job the first day with nationally recognized training certificates.
These courses focus on the two major areas identified by our contractors and the participants receive nationally recognized certificates from three wind turbine industry leaders - Capitol Safety, Snap-On, and HYTORC.
Note: Ironworkers have been erecting wind turbines for many years and in many situations are not required to have nationally recognized certificates, or only a small percentage of Ironworkers on each wind turbine site are required to have the certifications.
Each course is 4 days in length with 9 hours of course time each day, 8am - 5pm (including a 1 hour working lunch) and the next ones for 2011 are scheduled for:
- 7–10 March—there is still room in this course!
- 6–9 June
- 29 August–1 September
- 24–27 October
Note: In addition to these scheduled courses, if a local or signatory contractor has from 6 to 10 Ironworkers who require this training in order to work on a wind turbine erection project, IMPACT will arrange for the course to be conducted within 45 days of receiving a request.
The courses are first come, first serve with one exception, no one local or contractor can sponsor more than two Ironworkers in one course, any more than two individuals will be placed on a waiting list and if the course does not fill up, they can be added to the list before the course begins (about 3 weeks out so that air fare is still reasonable).
Cost for the participant (or the sponsoring Local or contractor)
- Air fare, bus fare, or personal driving expenses
- Hotel (about $100 each night)
- Meals (breakfast is provided by the hotel, lunch is provided by IMPACT during the course each day, the hotel also provides a light dinner Mon–Thurs)
IMPACT pays for
- Course tuition & course materials
- Lunches during the four days of the course
- Shuttle from airport to hotel as well as between the hotel and the school
To place Ironworkers on the list for a course, the Business Manager (or someone acting with his approval) needs to contact Harvey Swift providing the name(s) of the Ironworker(s) you wish to sponsor (if more than two, please indicate which two you would like to ensure are on the list and the rest will be placed on the standby list).
It must be indicated
- That the Ironworker(s) meet the prerequisites (Experienced journeyman with minimum 3 years experience, OSHA 10, Sub-Part R, and current First Aid/CPR/AED training)
- That the Ironworker(s) is(are) NOT a convicted felon
- Which course you prefer to sponsor the Ironworker(s) to attend
Do not make any travel plans until you receive confirmation from the IMPACT office that the course will definitely be held
Indicate immediately upon registering an Ironworker(s) if they will be checking in with more than one person to a room
