The Ironworker Management Progressive Action Cooperative Trust (IMPACT), in cooperation with Ken Atha, Regional Administrator for Federal OSHA; Joe Standley, President of the District Council of Iron Workers; Stephen Coffield, Administrator of Nevada OSHA; Dave McEuen, Management Co-Chair for IMPACT Region IX; and Michael Newington, Executive Director of the Western Steel Council, have established a "Steel Erection Training Initiative" to raise the standard of safety performance in the steel erection industry.
The "Steel Erection Training Initiative" was established with the cooperation of labor, management, and OSHA officials to address specific regulatory requirements for steel erection activities. In view of recent accidents that plagued projects in Las Vegas, all parties are committed to setting a new course to achieve outstanding safety performance. Joe Standley stated, "I am pleased with an opportunity to work with Nevada OSHA, Federal OSHA, and contractors in this training initiative to increase safety performance and cooperation on the jobsite." Ken Atha of Federal OSHA added, "This cooperative effort with IMPACT and the Ironworkers, developed to strengthen the knowledge of workers and safety professionals on the hazards and proper safe work practices, will help to ensure safe jobs for Ironworkers during the steel erection process." Stephen Coffield of Nevada OSHA states, "Our inspection staff is looking forward to attending the IMPACT Subpart R training class with local Ironworkers." This arrangement will enable enforcement officers, contractors, and Ironworkers to exchange information and discuss issues that will be beneficial to all parties. A strong supporter of the training initiative is Dave McEuen, Management Co-Chair for IMPACT. He states, "It is a win-win situation when the Ironworkers, steel erection contractors, and OSHA can work together to receive training on the same materials and regulations that govern the steel erection industry."
OSHA officials, union representatives, and IMPACT signatory contractors will convene a training session provided in Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada. Specialized training on (8) IMPACT steel erection training modules consisting of videotapes, instructional manuals, and PowerPoint training aids will be used to illustrate common hazards, safe practices, and regulatory requirements during the steel erection process. The training initiative is scheduled to begin in December.
