The 2010 Ironworker Apprenticeship Competition and Conference will be held September 15-20, in Seattle, WA. Next year's competition and conference will mark the first time there will be no registration fee for either the conference or ensuing competition.
The competition allows local unions from the United States and Canada to demonstrate the quality of their classroom and hands-on training. The competition includes a written test along with welding, torch cutting, knot tying, block reeving, reinforcing tying, ornamental window assembly, instrument tests and the 35-foot steel column climb.
The Ironworker Apprenticeship and Training Conference will be held on September 15-16. During the conference, local union apprenticeship coordinators, business managers, contractors and owners will have the opportunity to attend workshops and hold discussions to help address apprenticeship issues affecting the union ironworking industry throughout the United States and Canada.
The 2010 conference will bring a few changes including the elimination of the local union bi-annual assessment fees, which will be covered by IMPACT and the National Training Fund (NTF). IMPACT and the NTF are designing a leadership training class for competing apprentices. Additionally, another new special feature of the conference will be an "IMPACT the Industry" session featuring industry analyst / strategist, Mark Breslin. These sessions have been held regionally across the country to educate the rank and file and contractors about all of IMPACT's programs and to address the challenges facing the union construction industry.
