The Ironworkers have had a relationship with the National Labor College (NLC) for many years. Over the years a number of ironworker members have graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from the NLC (including Executive Assistant to the Ironworkers' General President Bill Tweet). In an effort to meet the education needs of the Ironworkers' membership, IMPACT staff members work closely with the NLC.
The National Labor College is located on a 47-acre campus in Silver Spring, Maryland. It began with the vision of George Meany, former AFL-CIO president, that labor have its own college - a national center that would provide labor education for all union activists.
With new leadership in place, the NLC is in the process of making a number of changes to better meet the needs of their students - which means union members. As you probably know, the NLC focuses on the learning needs of unionists, so their courses are organized around their students and their busy schedules. You can choose courses that meet entirely in the classroom, those that blend face-to-face and online learning or fully online courses-all designed to fulfill your learning needs and scheduled to make your degree achievable. As you study and learn, you will interact with unionists from all over North America in an atmosphere designed for your success.
The NLC will work with you to transfer credits from courses you may have taken at other institutions of higher learning. They can also help you earn credit for professional trainings, including military training and life experience.
Linked below are documents from the NLC that may be of interest to any Ironworker member looking to pursue a degree.
